Matthew 24:44 Therefore you also be ready, for the son of man is coming in an hour you do not expect. These words from Jesus are to warn us to always be ready for his imminent return.
The return of Jesus as a thief will be when the church is taken in the rapture. It is going to come as such a surprise to the unsuspecting world. However for believers it will be expected and hopefully anticipated, by those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ.
Thessalonians 5:1-5 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren you have no need that I should write you. For you yourselves know perfectly well that the day of the Lord comes as thief in the night. For when they say peace and safety, then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labour pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. But you brethren are not in darkness, so that this day should overtake you as a thief.
This day will overtake the unsaved world. But believers will be expecting it, because we know the word of God. Don't be misled by anyone who claims to predict the date of the rapture. It will be sudden and unexpected. We should be living everyday as though he could come back at any moment.

Right now there is an amazing convergence of Bible prophecy. Turning on the daily news is like reading the Bible. We are seeing all the signs that Jesus told us to watch for.
Matthew 24:32-33 Now learn this parable from the fig tree, when it's branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So you also when you see all these things know that it is near at the door.
If we look at the world around us it is hard to believe that the rapture will be much longer. How bad can things really get. Jesus says it is like a woman in labour, and the closer we get to the end the more the pain intensifies.
What a glorious day it will be when the trumpet sounds and we meet the Lord in the air. We will experience wonderful joy and peace like never before. We will at last be at the marriage supper of the lamb as our Lord promised.
Unfortunately all hell will be breaking loose down here on earth, because the tribulation will have started.
Matthew 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
Another scripture that tells of the Lord's imminent return is Luke 17:26-27 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the son of man. They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.
It appears that people were living normal lives. They were totally oblivious of the impending disaster. In the days of Noah the earth was corrupt as it is now. They did not believe what Noah had told them. They laughed and mocked him.
We also have scoffers in these last days. 2 Peter 3:3-6 Knowing this first, that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, where is the promise of his coming ? for since the fathers fell asleep all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation... For this they wilfully forget, that by the word of God the heavens of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world then existed perished, being flooded with water.
The world is full of people who are dull of hearing. They also enjoy their sin, like it says walking after their own lusts. They are on the broad road that leads to destruction.
From the word of God we can see that the rapture will happen very suddenly. It may be tomorrow it maybe next week, or maybe a few years. But the signs given by Jesus are all around us.
Revelation 16:15 Look, I will come as unexpectedly as a thief, blessed are all who are watching for me, who keep their clothing ready, so they will not have to walk around naked and ashamed.
